New Exhibition: Luis Antonio Trujillo – Encierros. Apotheosis of a Portrait

A Year of Observation

In Encierros, Luis Antonio Trujillo transforms portraiture into an experience of introspection and sustained dialogue with the living. The exhibition is the result of a year-long study focused on a single subject: a jaguar named Odín. Through prolonged observation, the artist constructs one face, one presence, allowing the same gaze to unfold across time and technique.

Confinement as Process

At the core of the project lies the idea of confinement, understood on two interconnected levels. On one hand, it reflects the animal’s captivity; on the other, it mirrors the artist’s own creative process. Trujillo approaches isolation as a voluntary condition of making—an inward withdrawal that enables careful observation, understanding, and reconstruction of the other’s presence. Within this parallel, confinement ceases to function merely as a physical limitation and becomes a reflective space.

One Gaze, Multiple Languages

The series brings together multiple techniques and visual languages, including woodcut, etching, oil painting, Chinese ink, drawing, and watercolor. Each medium returns to the same face, the same gaze, not as repetition but as inquiry. Through this sustained exercise, the boundaries between humanity and nature, freedom and enclosure, begin to dissolve. Odín is not portrayed as a symbol or representative of a species, but as an individual, granted the dignity traditionally reserved for human portraiture.

Looking as an Ethical Act

Beyond animal representation, Encierros proposes a shift in perspective: to look at the jaguar not from a position of dominance or classification, but through proximity and attention. The act of observing becomes reciprocal. From within his confinement, Odín returns the gaze with equal intensity, challenging the viewer to confront the ethical and emotional implications of looking.

Silence, Solitude, Correspondence

The correspondence between creator and creature runs throughout the exhibition. Trujillo transforms solitude into dialogue and silence into a form of listening. In this exchange, the notion of confinement expands, functioning as both condition and metaphor—an enclosed space where reflection, empathy, and presence can emerge.

A Meditation on Contemplation

Ultimately, Encierros is a meditation on contemplation itself. It asks what it means to truly observe another living being, and how that act of attention inevitably turns inward. The exhibition invites the viewer into a quiet encounter, where looking becomes an ethical gesture and silence becomes a shared ground.

About the Artist

Luis Antonio Trujillo (Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico) is a painter, printmaker, and draftsman whose work moves between classical realism and multidisciplinary technical exploration, encompassing painting, printmaking, lithography, and ink. He began his career in political cartooning, collaborating with media such as El Chamuco and Aristegui Noticias, before directing his practice toward the visual arts. He has been an artist-in-residence at La Ceiba Gráfica and studied under Edgar Cano and Sebastián Fund, both members of Mexico’s National System of Art Creators (SNCA). Currently, Trujillo divides his time between the Mexican Caribbean and his studio in Xalapa. In 2026, he will continue his training in painting and sculpture at the Barcelona Academy of Art.
